My Quiet Blacksmith Life in Another World: Volume 8 [Parts 1 to 3] by Tamamaru

Once the family was up and ready to work, we divided into two groups: one that would make a wooden fence, and one that would bury the unused portion of the pit. Planks would be placed vertically atop the stone portion of the well to form the shaft, and stakes would be inserted to fit them tightly together as we worked our way up. We needed to be much more precise here than we had been with the temporary cisternâotherwise, planks wouldnât be able to hold back the filled-in dirt, and the whole well could collapse. Luckily, my cheats allowed me to cut and place these planks with ease.
I left Anne and Helen to construct the fence. They were chosen, not because of their strength, but for their height. Since they could build the fence up to a certain height without the help of stepladders, I thought it would make our lives much easier. The rest of us would tackle filling in the pit. By pure chance, Helen and Anne wouldnât be filling in the hole theyâd excavated, but I thought that might just be the desired outcome anyway.
We continued work on the well while also managing to sandwich in an order for Camilo. (According to him, âAllâs right with the world,â and it seemed that the newlyweds were also quite happy. This was good newsâI couldnât stand it when problems popped up so frequently.)
Over the course of a few days, we finished constructing the wellâs shaft and buried the rest of the pit. We built the top of the well (the portion that sticks up above the ground where buckets are kept) and even crafted a wooden lid for the top so no one would accidentally fall inside. A bucket tied with some rope was placed on the side. While there wasnât a pulley or a roof for the well, it still looked splendid in its own right. We all gave a round of applause upon its completion, and Krul and Lucy trilled and barked with joy.
âI guess we made it in time...â I mumbled, wiping away some of my sweat.
As I looked around, I saw that the leaves of the trees were greener than everâa clear sign that we were in the middle of summer. If weâd been hoping to finish by the beginning of summer, we were a little too late...but it wasnât like temperatures would suddenly drop by tomorrow. Weâd dug the well in time to enjoy cool water in the midst of summer.
âYou should do the first scoop, Eizo,â Samya encouraged.
âThanks for the offerâI think I will.â
After removing the lid, I threw the bucket down into the well. Splash! I wiggled the rope to scoop some water into the bucket then decided to pull it up. Its weight made the rope go taut, and after tugging for a little while, the bucket appeared before my eyes, filled to the brim with clear water.
âThereâs still some stuff I want to add to it, but for now, the wellâs finished,â I announced.
